He heads research for Fusion IQ, a quantitative analysis firm for traders that also manages more than $180 million for wealthy investors, a job he came to after stints as a lawyer, trader and market strategist. But Ritholtz seems to have found his true calling as a blogger and columnist.

Variable annuities: Buyer beware

Variable annuities promise it all, and millions are buying in. Before you join them, you'd better know what's on the other side of the rainbow.

(MONEY Magazine) -- Chances are, you've already heard the pitch from an insurance agent or a financial adviser. And if you've been feeling anxious about the stock market (who hasn't?), it probably sounded pretty compelling: "Invest in stocks while protecting yourself from another 2008, with a guaranteed minimum return that provides income for the rest of your life!"

This promise propelled sales of variable annuities to $120 billion in the first nine months of 2011, already the highest yearly since 2007. The annuity itself -- a tax-deferred investment account with an insurance wrapper that provides a death benefit -- is only part of the appeal.

Fix shareholder rights

Banking analyst Mike Mayo, taking it to the street in front of the NYSE.

The 48-year-old banking analyst looks the classic Wall Street part: starched white shirt, short-cropped hair, athletic frame.

One reason Mayo is so fit: Whenever he gets angry he does pull-ups, or he writes. He's just finished a book and says he's up to 35 pull-ups straight. That's pretty angry. His wrath, however, isn't directed at the Occupy Wall Street protesters in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park who yell at guys like him. No, he's angry for them.

Housing: The one bailout America could really use

Housing analyst Laurie Goodman says underwater homeowners need a way out.

(MONEY magazine) -- Laurie Goodman is an apolitical number cruncher who has spent most of her 28-year career out of the public view, studying the minutiae of mortgage-backed securities (MBS) for big investment banks. She's long been a star among Wall Street insiders, however. She holds the record for the most top rankings for fixed-in-come research from the trade bible Institutional Investor.

While Goodman concedes she underestimated the impact of the housing bubble's bursting early on, by mid-2007 she was warning investors to prepare for a deep downturn. She prepared herself as well.

So you’re starting a blog from scratch, or maybe you have some experience and want to make sure that you’re not missing anything. Either way, I think I can help you out. I wrote this monstrosity of an article because I couldn’t find one anywhere that was thorough enough.

I want people to be able to get started after reading a single article, and there is no such article that I know of. This is the most thorough article on this subject I have seen anywhere on the internet.

Lately I’ve had quite a few friends ask me how to start a business online. I’ve even had a few friends start up some sites. I can see why, it’s such an intriguing way to make money. When people see you making money this way, they obviously hope that they can do it, too. So they start asking questions, and since they’re starting from scratch they usually have a ton of them.

This isn’t the only resource I’ve created to help people get the right start with creating a passive internet income. If you’re serious about owning websites that bring you income 24 hours a day with very little daily attention, I can tell you the best way to achieve that is by using search engine traffic from Google.

I wish I had more time to teach everyone one-on-one. Since I can’t mentor everyone this way, I want to create a resource for everyone.

Where I Would Start

If I had to start my entire business from scratch right now, I would start a blog. (I actually did start this blog recently, although I already have some profitable websites.)

Definition of a Blog

For those of you that are brand new to internet marketing, blog is short for weblog. It’s kind of like a journal or diary, except you don’t use it only for history. You can use it to post news on a topic, give tips about a specific niche, or to write random thoughts if you want. A blog puts the latest entry at the top, and the blog creates archives all of the older entries for you.

If you go to the homepage of this blog, you will see the latest post I’ve made. To the right, you will find 10 or so recent posts. These are the last things I’ve written for you on this blog. You will also see categories. With a blog, each time you post, or write an entry, you choose which category you want the entry to appear in. You will also see archives. Usually a blog organizes the entries you post by the date they were posted. Since this is the first month this blog is online (written Feb. 2007), under the archives you can only see February. This will be expanded to show more months as time passes.

Sounding Complicated?

I know that many of you are thinking right now that it sounds really hard to create a site that will do all of that for you. I know that it can be overwhelming to learn something brand new. The beauty of a blog is that YOU don’t have to make any of that work. There is free software that will do all of it for you. (We will get to that a little later, I just want to let you know now so you don’t get scared and click the back button.)

Why I Would Recommend Starting A Blog Instead Of An E-commerce Site (or any other type of site)

The biggest reason I would recommend starting a blog is because it’s easier. You don’t have to learn HTML. (HTML is the programming language that websites are written in.) Your biggest obstacle as someone trying to learn how to make money online is learning how to put a website together. You have to make tons of pages (that you designed yourself), and make sure they all work together. You have to create the layout, design, links, navigation, and content. (For the newbies, content is the articles, entries, and posts you put on your site. It’s the actual material that you write.) If you start with a blog you don’t need to do the layout, design, links, or the navigation. It’s all done for you, you just write the content.

Another reason I would start with a blog is that your blog will do some of your marketing for you. The program that I’m going to tell you to use will automatically alert some blog search engines when you post a new entry. These blog search engines will create links for you, and people will be able to find your site. The more you post, the more exposure you will get with the blog search engines. Even if this was the only marketing you ever did, you would be able to get some visitors and build up your list of readers.

Industrial stocks: Ready for a rally

Money January 3, 2012: 10:53 AM ET

(MONEY Magazine) -- A big investment theme of the past decade has been the growth of emerging markets catering to Western consumers. The story of the next 10 years may be the reverse: the rise of U.S. manufacturers supplying developing countries as they invest in the equipment needed to sustain growth.

That's a key reason U.S. industrials, which get 45% of their sales overseas, are expected to see earnings expand 12.3% in 2012 -- one of the best forecasts of any sector in the S&P 500 -- despite sluggish growth at home and in Europe.

If anyone would like to sell a site, please let me know. You can use the contact form on my contact page!

I’m basically looking for sites that are at least 6 months old that have at least a little income. I guess that means that I’m looking for sites that make between $10 and $1000 per month.

With all of the craziness in my life lately, I’ve been putting in some mad hours on my business. In all the chaos, I haven’t taken the time to mention two newer sites that you should be keeping your eyes on.

The first is The Affiliate Academy and is Vic’s membership site. If any of you out there aren’t familiar with Vic, you need to become so in a huge hurry. You can check out his free blog at Make Money Online with Blogger Unleashed.

The second is Griz’s new WordPress blog. You can find it here: Make Money Online with Grizzly. While most of his work is done at his other site (How To Make Money Online), I can see the new site quickly moving up in the rankings.

These two guys are geniuses and these two shouts are long overdue. You need to become familiar with them if you’re serious about making money with the internet. Sorry it took so long fellas, you guys rule.

Unique Article Wizard Review

As most of my readers know, I’ve been trying out Unique Article Wizard (I like to call it UAW) for a few months now. When I test out a service like this I dig in, use it, and then I take a look at the results. I use the results to decide whether I want to keep the service or not.

Article Marketing Services That I Have Stopped Using

Those of you that are familiar with article marketing will have heard of a few services that I have discontinued over the past year. Here are the ones I’ve tried:

iSnare – I got rid of them because they took weeks to approve my articles.Article Marketing Automation – I discontinued use because they didn’t get my articles out to very many sites. Most went out to about 30 sites.Article Marketer – This is the one I liked the most after UAW but I discontinued use after I started using UAW. Article Marketer has been taking a few weeks to get articles out, and doesn’t get you nearly as many indexed links as you can get with UAW. I made a lot of money because of Article Marketer so I guess ultimately I wasn’t too unhappy with it – I simply discovered a much better service.

What You Can Expect Out Of Unique Article Wizard

The only reason to use a service that helps your articles to get out there is so that you can get links for your site. UAW will give you a lot more links than each of the competing services I’ve tried and as far as I know, I’ve tried all of the big ones. If this service wasn’t by far the best I knew of, I wouldn’t have written a . I honestly would be reviewing one of the other services.

Since UAW gets your articles into quite a few blogs (mostly WordPress and Blogger blogs) you can get a lot more direct traffic than you would get from Article Marketer, iSnare, or Article Marketing Automation. It still isn’t a huge amount, but it’s more than you would think.

If you’re going to get the most benefit out of UAW, you want to find keywords that are medium and long tail. I would try to find keywords that are three, four, or five word phrases. Make sure to integrate the keywords into your site and then you can use UAW to write and distribute about the same topics. Links from related pages help more than links from unrelated pages and this will help your links to have more value.

You can expect to get at least 100 indexed links from a UAW submission. I have a few articles out there now that have been indexed with over 400 results in Google. This is because with UAW each site gets a slightly unique version. One of the s I read before buying the service also said that he was getting over 100 indexed pages that contained links to his site from each of his submissions.

My articles have been getting approved and submitted within 24 hours (they don’t work Sundays). This is a huge improvement over Article Marketer and iSnare, who were both taking over 2 weeks when I last used them.

Using Unique Article Wizard

Using this service is quite a bit like most other article distribution service with a few useful changes. With UAW, you create unique versions for each article directory. UAW won’t let me tell you how this is done but I can tell you that what you have to do is easy and it takes an extra 20 to make this happen. This seems to help a ton with the indexing in Google. With Article Marketer I could usually only get indexed on like 20 pages as of late but with UAW I almost always get a few hundred.

Another big change that’s awesome with UAW is that you can submit as many resource boxes as you want. That means you can use a lot of variety in your links and that’s a huge benefit. You can also put links within the articles if you want to.

Results from Unique Article Wizard

I have done a few experiments with Unique Article Wizard and have been able to get some great results. I recently did a test to see how much improvement I could get out of a single site in 30 days by using UAW and I was to improve the site I was testing from an average of $19.03 per day to an average of $38.72. I didn’t use any other promotional techniques because I wanted the test to be pure. The money was made with Adsense, here’s a screen shot of this channel for the last week from my Adsense account:

Update: This site was sold for a very nice amount. Congrats to the new owner AND to the seller. Now maybe he can afford to send his kids to a nice boarding school.

Competition Is Good: Dealing with Competitors in Your Internet Marketing Business

By Dave Huckabay, Grabapple.com

One of the things most Internet Marketers like to check before deciding whether or not to enter a particular niche is the competition. If there’s too much, or it looks too difficult to overcome, they’ll likely take a pass on it. If it seems weak they decide to take a stab at it. That’s well and good, but if you stop there, you’re bypassing an incredibly valuable source of information about your market.

I think my point of view is a little different from that of many internet marketers because I make my money by selling products directly to customers. The information in this article is aimed primarily at those who are building sites around products, whether for affiliate sales or direct sales customers, but whatever business model you’re using, you’ll find something here that you can put to use

Has Your Website Hit an Earnings Plateau? Here is How to Break Out of the Slump and Get it Growing Again

Most internet marketers have been at a place in their journey where their earnings sort of flat lined.

Maybe you sort of lose focus, stopped churning out content and links, or whatever.

This has happened to me in the past when I have been distracted with things that did not involve massive amounts of new content on my site.

For example, I might decide for some arbitrary reason that I need another really good link pointed at my website.  Not just some manufactured link but a real premium guest post, something that comes from a big website in my niche.  And so I get in my head that this is what I need and I start chasing it for a while, and maybe I send out some emails and I pitch the idea to some people, but I sort of end up spinning my wheels.

And at some point I realize that I have drifted away from the very core of my business: publishing quality articles on my website every single day.

So it should be fairly obvious as to how to fix this problem.

You need to get back into the habit of daily, on-site publishing.

The problem that I have experienced is that it becomes easy to talk myself out of that goal, especially when there are arguments running through my mind such as:

“I’ll never rank all of this new content without links.”

“No one will read my stuff unless I promote it.”

“Am I just wasting my time publishing content, when the big earners seem to be link building all the time?”

And so on.

This mental chatter only serves to disrupt your workflow.

At worst, it will sabotage your future earnings as well.

Think of it like this:

If you are putting up genuinely useful content, based on your own experiences and interests, then the promotional aspect of this business will take care of itself given a long enough timeline.

Most people do not want to wait 5 years or more to start seeing some results, so we still encourage some promotional activity.  But ultimately, if you want to succeed in this business, then you need to focus on making lots of amazing content on your own websites.

This does not mean that you should ignore promotion or link building.  Rather, it means that the foundation of your future income is in having published lots of quality articles on your websites.

If you have hit an earnings plateau, then your site already has the ability and the potential to earn more money.

Your main objective at this point is to give the search engines what they want.  Start creating lots of quality content for the site on a regular basis.

The easiest and most no-nonsense approach to that is to publish articles every day on the site.

Think of it like this:

A year from now, if you publish 3 articles per day on-site, then after a year your empire grows by over a thousand articles that can all potentially draw in long tail traffic.  On the other hand, if you only publish an article or 2 each week, and spend the rest of the time on link building, then your “empire” is going to remain relatively small for a very long time.

If your earnings have hit a wall, you basically have a choice:

1) More promotion, or

2) More published articles on-site.

If you take the long term view of this business, then your goal should be to publish more articles on-site.  This is doubly true if your website is already an earner.

Why You Are Not Earning the Income of Your Dreams On the Internet Yet

Talk with some of the big earners in the Keyword Academy community, and they will all tell you the same thing:

They have done a ton of work.

There is a huge disconnect in the world of internet marketing between what people believe to be the secret of making money online, and what the truth actually is.

People often believe there is a magic secret that–if only they knew what it was–would make them tons of money online.

The truth is that it takes work. Hard work. A lot of work.

And it takes sustained effort. You can’t just go nuts for a weekend and crank out 20 articles and expect to make buckets of money.

Nor can you write one or two articles each week and expect to build a profitable business in six months or less.

This is a numbers game based on having lots of quality articles. Part of the key is quality, of course. Garbage in, garbage out. Google is not stupid. Their algorithm used to be fairly crude, and dumping lots of cheap outsourced junk into a website was a great way to scale up your income.

That seems to be changing, quickly.

The bar has been raised, but your goal is still one of volume.

So now you have to juggle at least two balls: quality and volume.

If you nail them both, really nail them, then you can ignore the third ball–promotion–a little bit more.

The age of your site is a huge factor in the amount of authority that Google grants you. This may ratchet up even more as the web matures and the onslaught of webspam continues to pile up.

So now you have to be patient as well!

Sheesh….this keeps getting harder and harder, doesn’t it?

Is it all worth it?

Of course it is all worth it. But you need to keep things in perspective, and stay realistic.

You absolutely can build a nearly passive income online, but you are gonna have to put in the work to create something amazing.

Volume. Quality. Age. Creativity. Community.

These are the things that build a sustainable business online.

If you want a sustainable income then consider your earnings to publishing ratio.

If you have 5 articles on a niche site and you build a ton of links and this is earning you decent money, then how stable is that really? Not very. You have very few rankings so any fluctuations can vaporize your income.

One the other hand, say that you have 2,000 articles on your website. None of them rank great for big keywords, but the collective power of them produces a full time income. Stable? You bet. If you baked in quality from the start, then even the harshest algorithm update will only ding your earnings by about 30 percent or so (and that will just be collateral damage on Google’s part as they pull the Panda lever, your full income will be restored in a future update. Personal experience confirms that one.)

If you want to earn income online then anyone can just slap up some content and build some quick links and income will eventually be produced. But if you want a sustainable business then you are going to have to “go the extra mile” and create something real, something amazing, something that is oozing with quality and that is genuinely helpful. Something that stands out as being real in a sea of webspam.

The bigger the better. But don’t forget, quality is still priority number one.

Embrace Your Failures in Internet Marketing and Use them to Spur You Into Further Action

I got my start in internet marketing by learning about selling digital products on Clickbank.

The idea was tantalizing to me. A true system for passive income! All I had to do was create a digital product, set up a quick landing page, buy some pay per click traffic, and I could start printing money every day.

I decided to create a product based on a system for slot machine gambling. The idea was utterly ridiculous, because there is no legitimate strategy for slots (other than to own the casino!). But I went ahead and created this lame eBook and threw together a makeshift landing page and signed up for Adwords.

One person bought my book and then promptly requested a refund, claiming my product was trash. I burned through about 50 dollars worth of traffic and never made a successful sale.

I had failed.

It was from that failure that I found another forum, where someone was talking about building an online empire of legitimate content, that could then make money from advertising. This sounded like a lot more work to me, and it also sounded a lot less exciting. But because I had failed so miserably with my passive, automated, pay per click scheme, I was willing to give it a shot.

And so it goes. If you want to make money online, persistence is your greatest ally, because failure will be common in the beginning.

For example, when I started building my “content empire,” I had many emotional setbacks. A string of days with no AdSense clicks. Rankings in Google that would come and go at the drop of a hat. At one point I lost interest for a while and did not add new content for months on end. I lost interest and momentum because so many days resulted in zero earnings for me.

Another failure, by some measures.

But then something happened. I got really sick of my day job, and something flipped in my brain. I was suddenly no longer willing to go on with a life of mediocrity, living paycheck to paycheck, with no hope for a brighter future.

I sat down at the keyboard and I got serious.

Like 25-articles-in-a-single-day serious.

At some point, that switch had flipped in my brain, and I said to myself: “OK, I see that one or two articles each week is not cutting it.”

They say “fail early and fail fast.” Learn what is not working for you, and then take corrective action.

If you really want online income then you are going to have to create it. Build it. Grow it. Expand what is working for you. Discard your failures and move on with renewed energy.

Most people fail with internet marketing because they do not attack this business with a serious enough effort. That is the common failure that I see over and over again.

An entrepreneurial path is one of high intensity energy. Passive online income does not just fall into your lap.

My only real failure in my career was when I temporarily gave up on it. Had I created something every single day (3 articles per day anyone?), I would have hit my income goals a lot sooner.

Look at your situation with complete honesty. Have you failed to meet your income goals? Why? The answer is almost always a lack of consistent daily action.

Identify your failures and resolve to move past them.

Everyone fails in internet marketing at some point. The big earners are the ones who move past those failures and take action with renewed enthusiasm.

Can I Make it to $1,000/Month in Online Income by Only Publishing Two Articles Per Week?

Someone within the Keyword Academy once said that they were most comfortable with a posting schedule of putting up two new articles per week on their website.

They wanted to know if they could get to $1,000/month in online income with this schedule.

My opinion is that you would have to be very lucky and talented to build an income like that with such low volume, and you would somehow have to:

1) Get incredibly lucky with your topic selection.

2) Publish extremely valuable content that spreads in a viral fashion.

3) Have a unique and highly efficient form of monetization that goes beyond basic CPC ads and affiliate sale.

If you think about those 3 points and really take a long hard look at them you will realize that betting on any one of them is not realistic for most newcomers.  This is because:

Making the Most of Your Limited Time

By Philia, Social Media Springboard

From time to time, I’m asked about how it is that I’m able to manage my Internet marketing business while holding down a full time job and raising a family. Some time ago, I addressed this question in the TKA private forum. I’ve received feedback from several members about how that post was quite helpful to them so I thought that it would be worthwhile to revisit the matter today.

It’s my hope that this post will help some of you who may be struggling to find the time to spend growing your online businesses, develop work habits that will help you achieve your goals.

Regardless of Who You Are, Everyone Faces Time Management Challenges

One thing that many of us struggle with is finding the time to sit down at our computers and write articles or promote our websites on a consistent basis. Whether you have a lot of free time or you have very little, the chances are high that you could make better use of your time if you employ a couple of strategies that I’ll talk about today.

The two main issues that I’ll be writing about today are having good work flow systems in place and developing the self-discipline to manage your time effectively.

The Importance of Developing Good Work Flow Systems

Without good systems in place, I wouldn’t be able to get anywhere near the work accomplished that I do. The tasks that many of us here at The Keyword Academy do are very similar. We do keyword research, we build websites, we write content for these websites, and we promote them through either link building or other website promotion strategies.

While the tasks are the same, some members are able to perform these tasks on a much larger scale than others. Oftentimes, it’s even the people who have less time to actually sit down at the computer who get more work accomplished.

For me, the reason I’m able to produce a massive amount of content with limited time is because I have developed efficient systems that help me to make the best use of my limited time. Many of us feel like we are working as efficiently as possible but you would be surprised how taking a good hard look at your workflow can make you even more efficient.

Because much of what we do tends to be quite repetitive, anything we can do to streamline our daily workflow will result in us being able to get more done in the same amount of time.

What I like to do is make a flow chart that shows every step that goes into performing a certain task. Then I ask myself two questions. The first is, “are all of these steps really necessary?” and the second is, “how can I perform each of these steps faster with less effort?”

Eliminate Low Value Tasks and Focus On High Value Tasks

When I first got started in this business, I spent a lot of time in front of my computer doing what I considered to be working. Now that I’ve been at this a while, I realize that most of my time was being spent on low value tasks that simply occupied my time and made me feel like I was working hard.

There’s no question that I was putting the time in but I hadn’t yet learned the importance of identifying low value tasks and eliminating them out of my daily workflow.

Let me give you an example of what my days were like back then.

The first thing I would do was check my many email accounts and respond to any emails that I thought I needed to respond to.Then I would go to the forums to see if anyone had replied to any of my posts and find out what the latest forum chatter was. Then I would pop in at a number of other MMO blogs and forums that I was in the habit of visiting each day.Lastly, I would spend whatever time I had remaining to write some articles for my websites as well as some articles to use for backlinking.

One day when I was feeling really frustrated because I wasn’t getting enough work done, I took a much closer look at my work patterns and asked myself some tough questions. I was putting a lot of hours in but I rarely had much to show for my time. You might say that I was lying to myself by convincing myself that I was actually working when, in reality, all I was doing was wasting time.

What I was actually doing was spending 50% or more of my efforts on tasks that wouldn’t have any impact on the growth of my business whatsoever. This is when I first sat down and analyzed my work habits to identify the low value tasks that could be culled out of my daily workflow.

After I made the list, I was blown away when I realized how inefficient I was with my time. Here are some examples of tasks that I thought were so important at the time.

Low value task: I was keeping detailed spreadsheets to record every link that I had ever built along with what I considered to be important details about each link. Solution

Blogging Experiment: Developing a Website that Earns a Substantial Income

Time for a new blogging experiment.

There is a saying about success in business (I’m paraphrasing a bit here):

“One time lucky, second time–you might actually know what you are doing!”

I recently experienced some huge success with my supersite when I sold it off for a large sum of money. My next internet marketing experiment is going to determine whether I was lucky or not.

In order to duplicate my success I am converting a niche website that I own into a supersite. I’ll be doing this using TKA principles and methods that are taught in the core lessons, with a few advanced tips thrown in along the way.

I am not revealing the URL of this website experiment publicly, but I will post it later on in the forum (on the “inside” of The Keyword Academy). The fact is, this is not a “quick and dirty” kind of blogging experiment. The results will take several months to become apparent, but the potential payoff is enormous. Slow and steady wins the race. This is about building a sustainable business, not a quick money grab.

So this blogging experiment is to turn a niche site that currently earns less than $50/month into a full time earner.

Let’s start with content planning. My philosophy has always been to gear this towards long term organic link building.

I don’t like to sound like an A-list blogger, but the absolute core of this effort starts with outstanding content.

Take a single article and refine it until it is:

Extreme couponing: Stockpiling in order to save

Michelle and Darren Gutwein with kids Alex and Zoey, and the $750 worth of groceries they bought for $122.

(Money Magazine) -- Malinda Hodges, a 41-year-old business technology consultant for Bank of America, is one of many coupon enthusiasts who never dreamed she would find herself stockpiling men's deodorant under the bathroom sink. But in 2008, when her husband, Dwayne, was laid off from his job in the mortgage industry, she began using coupons to help support their three children, now ages 3 to 12, and her mom, who lives with them in Fort Mills, S.C. Dwayne eventually found work, but Malinda never gave up her bargain-hunting ways.

Now couponing seems like a common sense way to live. She buys six Sunday newspapers for the inserts each week, then matches the coupons with weekly sales at nearby retailers, some of which double or even triple the coupon value.

25 Best Places to Retire

Cost of living index: 95
As lovely as it sounds to sip margaritas on the beach, doing it year round can get old. This picturesque town on Michigan's Upper Peninsula offers outdoor fun for all seasons. With an average of 141 inches of snow a year, there's plenty of the white stuff for cross-country skiing and other winter sports. In summer, you can grab a kayak and start paddling on Lake Superior.

And when outdoor activities grow tiresome, you can count your savings. A new three-bedroom townhouse with panoramic lake views recently sold for about $375,000. That's more than twice the price of the typical home here -- but 30% less than a similar property might have cost near Seattle.

There's also plenty of low-cost and free activities. Retirees can take advantage of a wealth of offerings at Northern Michigan University in town. People 62 or older can attend classes free, and the affiliated Northern Center for Lifelong Learning offers low-cost diversions, from bird watching to dinner clubs.

If all that excitement causes heart palpitations, you're in the right place: Thomson Reuters ranks Marquette General Health System among the nation's top 50 cardiovascular hospitals.

7 secrets to super customer service

• 'My secret to super customer service'
• How to get the best customer service
In the past year, my wireless carrier refunded me $50 in international roaming charges that were my fault; airline reps saved me hundreds by rebooking my delayed or canceled flights for free; and my sofa was reupholstered at no charge, long after the one-year warranty was up.

My list goes on. I'm either extremely lucky or extraordinarily demanding, right? Nope. I'm just good at getting the companies I do business with to treat me well -- and to do the right thing when a situation goes awry.

In an age of deteriorating customer service -- two out of three consumers switched at least one service provider last year because of poor treatment, a recent survey by Accenture found -- that's no small feat. But it's one you can achieve too.

After consulting with customer service experts, psychologists, industry insiders, and the smartest consumers around (MONEY readers, natch), I've arrived at the secrets to getting superb service that follow.
